Reading is obviously recognised as an essential element of all learning. We aim to teach the skills of reading and to foster a lifelong love of language. Children will bring books home from Reception and this will continue throughout their school life. We view the education of children as a partnership with parents and ask them to read with their children as often as possible. All reading books are matched to children’s abilities carefully and children work systematically through each level at their own pace.
All children from Reception to Year 6 will have the opportunity to read in school. Much of their reading will be done during the Guided Reading sessions, but individual reading will also occur as necessary. Children will also be reading across a range of subjects. All of the children have access to the school library where they can borrow books to bring home and share. We also have a library bus service which operates on a fortnightly basis. There will be many opportunities for the children to read in other areas of the curriculum.
