Design & Technology

Design and technology gives children the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making products whilst enabling them to use their creativity and imagination. At Deykin Avenue, we use the National Curriculum to support our planning and link Design and technology to the curriculum topics for each year group.

At KS1, children will:

  • design, make and evaluate purposeful, functional appealing products
  • select and use a range of tools and resources suitable for helping them to make their design
  • explore the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet and make healthy meals, e.g. fruit salad
  • explore and use mechanisms, including levers, wheels, axles

At KS2, this will include:

  • expand their design skills to inform the making of innovative, functional, appealing products
  • selecting and using a wider range of materials and components
  • using investigative and analytical skills, evaluating their ideas and to consider how to improve their work
  • applying their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products
  • using electrical systems in their products, for example, series circuits incorporating switches, bulbs, buzzers and motors
