Year 6 trip to Drayton Manor |
On Tuesday 18th May, Year 6 went to Drayton Manor for the day as a reward for their hard work leading up to and including SATs week. As you can see from the photographs, we had a lovely, sunny day. We looked around the zoo first before some of us braved the big rides! The children (and staff!) had a fantastic day. Congratulations to all the children for their outstanding behaviour.

Deykin Avenue FC - 2009/2010 Season CHAMPIONS! |
Ten of the boys in our current Year 5 & 6, have been fortunate enough to be members of the school football team. Those who were involved, took part in 30 games over the course of the season, playing 15 other schools from the Aston area. The matches took place on Fridays after school, and were held at the Aston Villa Academy. The children very much enjoyed participating as often as they could, and quickly got into the competitive spirit of the matches. The children’s enthusiasm was also enhanced by being able to check the League Republic website, where they could find our latest league table position, check on our next fixtures, or just to see how the other schools were getting on. The final game of the season was held at the end of May, and Deykin Avenue finished TOP OF THE LEAGUE, for the second time in 3 years. The boys deserve credit for their skills and hard work this season, as do the staff that gave up their time to accompany them. There will be the opportunity to form a whole new squad in September, ready for the 2010-11 season - so Year 4’s and 5’s need to get practising! Year 4 Visit to Aston Hall |

Our topic for this half term is to look at our Local History. Year 4 have been doing some research on Witton and the surrounding areas. We have found out that royalty, King Charles 1st spent a short time at Aston Hall in 1642! Year 4 visited Aston Hall on Wednesday 5th May. It is a magnificent seventeenth century red-brick mansion situated in a public park on the north side of Birmingham . The Hall was built for Sir Thomas Holte. The children had fun dressing up as King Charles 1 st, Sir Thomas Holte, his servants, and Royalists. We had a grand tour of the building and we eventually entered the dining hall and feasted at the great table.

Year 1 raise funds to visit the Botanical Gardens |
Due to price increases of coach companies and entrance fees Year 1’s trip to Birmingham Botanical Gardens was in jeopardy. Instead of not going Year 1 decided to rise to the challenge by raising money to subsidise the trip themselves. After lots of suggestions Year 1 decided to raise money through a cake sale and singing competition. The cake sale went down a treat raising a massive £160 over the course of two days. Thank you to staff, parents and children who supported the event. The week of fundraising ended with a singing competition which raised £20. Every class from reception to year 6 entered. Competition was stiff with everyone out to impress the judges Mrs Gay, Mrs Phelan and Mr Storrod. The standard of talent was outstanding with winners and highly commended from each key stage. The event ended with singing lean on me. It was a vocal demonstration of Deykin Avenue’s community
spirit with staff, pupils and parents bringing the house down together. You

School Gates Employment Support Initiative |
The School Gates Employment Support Initiative is part of the government’s efforts to accelerate progress in tackling and reducing child poverty in the UK and to support families through the economic downturn. The Initiative aims to increase the amount of employment and enterprise support that parents receive in and around their children’s schools. Find out more about the partners. It is hoped this will help to increase the number of parents in low income families entering sustainable employment. This might not be full time employment; for some parents, part-time employment or self-employment may be more suitable. Parents may not enter work within the lifetime of the initiative, but with the support they receive, it is hoped they will be enabled to move closer to the labour market.

In the Spring Term Year 2 have been investigating animals. Year 2 have used books, the internet, their own ideas and a visit to help them write, draw, model and take pictures of what they have learnt.
Year 2 made roc animals using wires and plaster bandages. First we made a wire frame and cut bandages which were put in water and then squeezed out and wrapped around the wire. We then left the model to dry.
